Wednesday Update

What we want to start doing in some of these Wednesday Updates is begin to look at major events in the news in their larger historical context.... And maybe even how some things will be viewed in 5 years, 10 years or even 50 or 100 years...

Subject: Global Warming, and the Ultimate "warming" Crisis

(Wed., November 14, 2007)

(approx. 975 words, 2 pp.)

Always Remember...

that Greenland was called Greenland because it was a green land?

(or)

Do the math, but...

how many hours does the average person have to follow this debate?

(or)

Always Remember, without question...

The Ultimate Inconvenient Truth, and The Ultimate Climate Change!

The global warming thing is starting to get a little tiresome, I think, for many people? In my view the real issue on the environment is still pollution, global warming or no global warming, but interestingly one of the Biblical catastrophes of the end times is a hot sun! (Revelation 16:8-9) What does that mean? Beats me. It doesn’t really matter because "global warming" is not The Ultimate Inconvenient Truth! The Ultimate Inconvenient Truth is: It is appointed to man once to die and then after that the Judgment! (Hebrews 9:27)

How many hours does the average person have to follow this debate?

I am not a scientist, and I do not play one on TV. But I was watching television recently, and one of the major networks had sent a reporter at great expense to Greenland to get the final word on "global warming" from a scientist working there because some of the ice sheets are melting there. So what? The reporter was very concerned about the issue, and they also had interviews with AlGore and so forth and so on, but the scientist seemed to be a global warming alarmist, as well as expert. Finally the reporter asked the scientist how bad could it get if the warming continues and sea levels rise? Certainly not 23 feet, as I have heard, the reporter asked? The scientist said "no," but the situation was very serious, maybe 1 to 4 feet in the next 100 years.

Fine, do the math on this best case/ worst case scenario! Worse case of global warming 4 foot rise in sea level over the next 100 years! That is about 1/2 inch per year! And best case of global warming? One foot rise in the next 100 years! That is about 1/8 of an inch per year for the next 100 years. It is hard to imagine that even the very worst case possible is really the cause for so much alarm, but maybe it is?! And it is not clear how much human activity would figure in this 1/8 to 1/2 inch per year range, anyway? What I wonder is how many hours does the average person have to follow this debate, and even sometimes the hysteria, when these are said to be the best and worst case scenarios by one of the top news organizations in the world today? I mean, who cares?

Always remember that Greenland was called Greenland because...

Many years ago (about 30!), when this debate on global warming was just heating up, so to speak, I used to have a professor who would say, "Always remember that Greenland was called Greenland, originally, because it was a green land." Is that true? Beats me. He was not a scientist, he was an historian telling the known facts of history as he understood them. But that is consistent with other classes I had, but never on global warming, as such. The Vikings, or some such folks, actually had permanent colonies on Greenland, but it got cold! Very much colder! And they either abandoned their colonies or perished, but the ruins still remain. I thought this was "common knowledge"! But apparently not?

Furthermore, in yet other classes on European history, we learned that before a time of global cooling (I do not remember, maybe 7 or 8 hundred years ago?) Europe had very moderate winters, but it started getting much colder over a period of years, and it has stayed cold ever since. Is this true? I have no idea. The point is I thought it was common knowledge that we have had somewhat significant global climate change (from a human perspective) over the centuries. But, apparently, this is not well known? However, in reality, the bigger environmental problem may be we have a significant pollution problem that should be addressed whether we are heating up slightly, or not? (On some of these issues follow the money? Some people seem to be paid to produce catastrophic/ "activist" reports? Other times hysteria seems almost to take on a life of its own? Remember Y2K?)

Bottom-line: The Ultimate Inconvenient Truth?

The truth is the climate appears to be changing somewhat or has changed somewhat significantly over the fairly recent centuries, but the real Inconvenient Truth, The Ultimate Inconvenient Truth is that it is appointed unto men once to die, and then the Judgment!!! (Hebrews 9:27) For some reason I do not recall seeing too many stories on this one in the mainstream media over the last few years, and certainly no reports ringing alarm bells! Maybe a major network, to highlight this potential problem, indeed this true crisis, could send reporters to the bottom, medium, and top floors of the Pit to see what it looks like and what the "warming" climate conditions are there! Sort of like Dante did! Because this can be the Ultimate Climate Change for all of us, for certain, forever! Big time! Do we need to wake people up to the true "warming crisis" of our time? It would, no doubt, do wonders for ratings, and might even change the world truly and significantly for the better! And that would be a good thing?
